New Dangers of Viruses and Worms
The latest big hacking attempt came from someone who tried to abuse the xmlrpc functionality in blogs and forums.
This approach (trying to intrude a server) would be a typical worm for servers. But the worms are everywhere and try to invade your mailbox as well. The attempts are endless and you should be prepared:
- Server Attacks: It is almost impossible for a newbie or hobby site to make a server 100% secure. There is basically no difference between a Microsoft or a Linux server. Both have reported security issues and if you do not update your server on a regular basis, you might get an intrusion sooner or later. Keep your server up2date!
- Client Attacks The only way to avoid a virus or worm on your working machine is to run an up2date virus scanner and to NEVER EVER open attachments from emails! Do not download any programs you are not 100% sure that they are OK. Be paranoid with that and you will have some fun with your computer. Stay away from hacking, cracking, warez sites!
Yesterday was one of my record filter days. I filtered over 200 infected mails away. Geeeez!
