What does the Creative Commons License do?

I do not read over at CNET much, but Tom caught my eye with the statement “53 million works on the Internet link back to a Creative Commons license” - wow, that is a figure!

But what is that license about and why should you be informed, if you create digital content?

A short passage of his article says:

“Copyright law protects any creative work you create whether you want it to or not. Nobody can legally use your work beyond fair use without a license. Creative Commons serves as a license that people who want their work to be shared can issue. Don’t want your work to be shared? No problem. Don’t use a Creative Commons license.”

That describes it quite good:

If you for example want other people to use your music on their myspace pages, you can put your work under the CCL and allow them to. The CCL for me is like the legal marketing framework for digital goods, that you want to have distributed (for example if you want to promote your other content).

The article is worth 5 minutes of your time and you can read it here:
