Some updates for the technophile
For those of you who are interested in the Linux setup we have installed in the back of tradebit to handle growth and stability, here some additional informations worth sharing:
- Bandwidth limitations are gone: while serving content from 5 web servers at the moment, all 5 machines have unrestricted 100 MBit uplinks to the net. Internally we are hooked up to a second switch with full duplex 1 Gigabit connections. The overall throughput of the system may spike up to 0.5 Gigabit per second and is expandable on demand
- Everything 64bit: Our whole setup consists now of 14 brand new Dell machines of different sizes. All have at least 4 processor cores, some have 8. All machines have at least 4 Gig of RAM, most of them have 8 or 16 for the database handling.
- File space: the storage machines are expandable by steps of 1,2,4 or 8 Terabytes if we need more space for larger publishers now
So, any restrictions on the file size should be gone. You may upload HD movies with 4 or 6 Gigabytes in size or create collections of that scale. Nonetheless: those files sell badly, try to make it easy for the customers to download!
The bandwidth limits of the FTP upload is gone. I already saw some people coming from university networks and blasting files up with 80 MBit/s … that is fine!
Downloading speed should also be no longer an issue. We had a 20 MBit/s limit per download during the last years, but that is history!
