With all the millions of files in the tradebit database, controlling the structure, finding the right files and making it all stable and fast is a tricky task for our small team. We thought the first step is an improved on-site search process.
My colleague Martin just released his take on search:
We have installed the new SphinxServer on our cluster (people love to call that cloud now
and integrated that tighter into the catalog. Sphinx is a server (like Apache Webserver or other services you probably know) that learns about a database and gives very very fast answers, if you search for a specific search term.
The software ranks the results by keyword relevance and keyword density in the texts (title, description, etc.)
We used an earlier version on tradebit for years and with the new releases of Sphinx, we upgraded to bring you faster and better search results.
That includes 3 little, but important changes:
1.) The new input field on top
Activate the input field on top of this page to see it magically expand and offering you more options to filter products. You may also limit your search to certain merchants now!
2.) Suggestions while you type
We pull search keys which brought customers in the past and products that fit your input while you type. That is also powered by Sphinx and quite well performing.
3.) Filter by category on the left
Once you land on your result page, the left menu flips and offers your further filtering of the result set.
We hope you enjoy the best search we have done so far and wish you a perfect weekend!
