Data Mining on the web: get to know your domain better!
A successful site today fullfills 3 major marketing aspects:
- Good ranking on the search engines
- Usage of the right keywords for a specific topic
- Easy and clear navigation, which should lead to high conversions
Well, a simple list, but tough work, because finding out, which are the right keywords for your site could already be a never ending task. We are amazed about the search terms we find in our logs and would have never thought of certain combinations, which people actually use to find us on Google, Yahoo and the like.
If you want to know, how your site is doing online and what parts you have to work on, you should start quite simple with a bit of data mining:
- Using Alexa:
Traffic ranking on alexa is calculated on the usage data of their toolbar. The all over amount of installed toolbars is not huge, but if you are familiar with statistics and mathematics, you should know, that data collection based on a few thousand internet savy users is quite a lot and could give you a good idea of what is going on. - Using Google:
By typing in “site:mydomain-name.com” as a google search term, you will get the amount of pages listed from your domain. You will also see, how your titles of the pages do look. If they look strange or your site is based on flash or javascript you have to work on that!
There are a lot of statistic tools for web sites out there. Ranging from professional services like urchin.com to free scripts you may download from hotscripts.com or even here at tradebit.
