Building a community can be hard
With over 10,000 unique visits a day, I would say we have some people around here, we can reach. Not really huge, but solid and I am proud of that! But if I look at the amount of comments posted or into forum, I see only handful of active users. Why is that?
In my opinion, this platform is either too young to really bind hundreds of active users or the topic is too broad. We talk about all kinds of software, from the SOHO user to pure fun, from music and mp3 stuff to Linux administration. A wide area, and I guess many people have an elite approach to their topic and only feel well, if they are among their kind. Independant musicians may want to hang out with other artists, but not with the Linux guys.
For me, as the sysadmin of this platform, it means we have to emphasize the niches better and do more “vertical” marketing in the future to build some loyalty in the different user groups. After all I think, this is the requirement for all new sites: find your niche to really build “authority” in. The rest happens by it self.
