Releasing a Movie to the world
After one well known director (Richard Halpern) released his movie on tradebit first (and only), I was thinking about the impact the new ways of film and music (in fact all entertainment) distribution will change the industry.
Right now artists go to the big labels and studios or to publishers, who will put their book out. Well, that will change for sure, the question is when? Right now the digital sales market is a niche and due to the lack of a worldwide accepted micropayment still a small one.
Nevertheless are the signs obvious: everything digital will be sold online and will be delivered over the net, the question is: can an idependent director or musician create enough momentum to stay NET-only and to avoid a clash with the traditional investors and sales channels (especially the movies need funding and a far reaching sales network)?
According to media consultancy “Screen Digest”, download sales will be
worth more than £329m a year by 2010 in the UK, and £733m across Europe as a whole.
In the United States, the market will be worth £1.24bn per year (= 2.2bn US$).
That is quite big, but compared to the overall software sales in the cosumer area combined with DVD sales and music sales, this figure is still kind of small.
As bandwidth rises, we will watch that market change rapidly! Downloading is much cheaper than postal delivery, much much cheaper! That will bring a lot of funding into that area sooner or later!

[...] Today Michael Arrington writes in his blog: “Video Sites: Breeding Like Rabbits”, with slightly evil tone in the headline, but quite some info in the article itself. After YouTube raised millions in VC, more new sites jump the bandwidth wagon and look for business in the Online Video Distribution market. Again, the money is supposed to come from eyeballs, eyeballs you drag to your advertisment on the pages or even in the videos itself. Tradebit follows a simliar model, offering huge storage space for a very small dollar. That only works, because we drag (today) over 30,000 unique daily visits to the file detail pages and can grab one or the other advertising dollar by doing so. [...]
