Don’t link too much…

There are a few programs out there, which promise you to create massive backlinks to your site within a short time and that you can monitor your position on the search engines and improve it with these tools. Well, it is right, that backlinks are important for your rank, but what Google does for sure not like and what could lead your site to be banned from the search giants pages is “wild linking”, links that do not relate to your site.

So, I normally do not react, if people ask for backlinks. It is mostly some shady life insurance blog or some total weird medicine with affiliate links all over the place.

Not so Emanuele from Lugano, who dropped into my mailbox today, asking kindly for a backlink to his music related site. I looked at his blog and saw, that he is really passionate about guitar playing - now guess what: I started my guitar lessons this spring (I am horrible, but I needed something without keys to play around with ;-), so here is your link, Emanuele: keep teaching the world how to play guitar, but keep away from these shady link exchange places, that could put your blog to nowhere in Google - and if I am down in Lugano, you owe me a good wine ;-)

All the rest of you: have a nice weekend!

I am confused. The point of your post above was to give a link to Emanulle’s site, right? You tell him to get good links to assist in Google rankings and then SUPPOSEDLY give him a link. Why are you using the “nofollow” tag then? Google is the only search engine that reads this tag and you have essentially told them that the link you are giving to Emanuelle is no good and to not follow the link. This means he gets none of your page rank or any recognition whatsoever in the eyes of Google. Many people are not aware of people like you giving these so-called links that do them no good in Google.

To anyone out there wanting to make sure the links you get do NOT have the “rel=nofollow” tag I recommend using Firefox with the Search Status extension installed. It will automatically highlight any link with the “nofollow” tag so you can see who is helping and who is not.

Mark, you are right, the link is not counted, but that was a mistake, ‘coz i got that by default switched to “on”. Actually, I wanted to give him the link, which counts… i need to fix that.

    So heres a question…
Notice how I use a keyword rich link to point to my domains home page?
Would it achieve more success if I instead linked to a deep article on my site?

I mean in terms of backlinks and PR etc. what would get more results with google, linking to the homepage or to some deeper content page?
(Yes using keywords as anchor text)

    Let me know….

    Thanks Erik

Erik, the king level of search engine optimization is to create NAMED links to your pages with the keywords in the title. A link to your homepage helps but there are more people out there, who outrank you, because they build backlinks to their pages directly… if the amount of links is the ultimate factor for your rank - you collect them on the homepage and the others collect them to their pages directly. They’ll win…
