Traffic and Conversion: succeed online
When I started to do SEO (search engine optimization) in early 2002 I was quite late in that market for the US, but quite early for it in Germany. Things were pretty easy, only a handful people and companies understood the game and Google was easy to “persuade” to list my stuff (no matter if it had good content or was just stupid SE spam). Well, these days were ended by Google in a good and solid clean up of their index and with some nice updates in their algorythm by the end of 2003 (which became known as update FLORIDA).
That was the time when I came back from pure affiliate marketing to build my own site (tradebit that is), which had the potential to grow and feed me if just done right. Meanwhile the company was bought and we produce a healthy 70.000 - 90.000 US$ turnover per month in digital goods! WICKED!
Recently I was contacted to do some SEO as a consultant for a larger german company and I worked on that project some days. Finally I came up with (IMHO) a nice chart to bring the newcomer to Internet Marketing:
![]()
(click on image for full size)
You may use that image or chart in your own presentations, but please refer to me, if you do so.
So all this image tells you is, that there are 2 sides of creating a successful site: Traffic and Conversion! If you have a lot of traffic and your users do not buy… well… then your pages are badly designed!
The sources of traffic are also various and doing SEO is not the only way to create some visits.

Great diagram.
One thing that I’d like to see included there would be Domains as a means to generate type-in traffic. The right generic name for your vertical can be a tremendous addition for a site and leasing or buying it can increase traffic significantly.
