Google Chrome vs. IE8
Just testing out the latest Google Chrome browser on one machine and the newly released IE8 on the second box - a little competetive test if you like. Both machines run Vista on 32 bit.
- Installation: Chrome did install very quickly. IE8 started a little update orgy and the other computer has just finished with the reboot - while I already played around with Chrome for 4-5 minutes. Not very impressive so far. But lets move over to the other screen and check around…
- Start-up: Both packages start quickly and import settings from other browsers. Chrome did not find the Firefox portable I was using on the box, but that is understandable! IE8 finally is ready after asking some questions (suggested sites on your browsing behaviour will be a big topic on the technical forums, I guess).
- Appearance: Chrome is a bit nicer looking over all, but the “loading” animation on the left tab is so small that you almost overlook it. I clicked a link and felt something is wrong, nothing loads. IE8 is not really blending in on the Vista Aqua theme I am running and comes in a light blue inner window that just looks not nice on my black and liquid desktop. Both browsers have their preferences and additional buttons integrated on the upper right. Chrome comes along minimalistic and both are OK. But where is the stupid “Home” button for Chrome? Not there… you have to set a bookmark to have it in the toolbar - not nice! I am a heavy “Home” clicker, because I have my own bookmark overview page locally! Grrr…
- Feeling: Chrome gives you an incredible speedy impression. IE8 feels just a bit faster than IE7. At least a little improvement. Chrome looks incredible fast and I am thinking of living without my home button and using it.
Not sure, if the world needs one or the other and if they are better than the latest Opera browser release! Also the almighty Google data hunger might leave a bitter taste. If you are using the Google toolbar in your browser that should not be a concern, because they got you anyhow. For web developers the release of both packages at the same time just add one more test environment to the release process.
Now I will switch back to Opera for now and wish you a nice weekend…
