Our view on paypal…
If you look around for micropayment solutions, there are not many people trying to offer you a solution. Stormpay, Bitpass and PayPal are the 3 that come to my mind instantly. We still want to implement Stormpay as an alternative, but PayPal is just huge and well introduced on the market.
From my perspective as a “tekkie” the ease of use and the scope of documentation for PayPal combined with the ebay powerhouse in the back makes it the superior solution by far. But there is a downside also (you might find some hate pages about paypal out on the net). The company exploded in size. The idea was picked up quite quickly and the prices are fair. Integration with 3rd party solutions is so nice. That draw thousands of users to them very quickly. The outcome is, that reponse times and feedback on errors could last longer that it is good for an excellent service impression.
My conclusion is: there is no easier integration and no payment processor for micropayments, who is more stable than paypal in terms of company existence. All new startups or VC backed companies trying to compete could be gone tomorrow.
I take the downsides of PayPal for the sake of stability on the long run. Maybe their infrastructure is not yet able to cope with the fast growing business?
