Music bitrates and the differences

In my experience, the bit rate of a MP3 file beyond the 196 bits per second is loosing its meaning for most of the music I am listening to.

If you have a real nice stereo and you can really turn up the volume (most of the time my neighbours would get me arrested) you can hear the quality step between 128kbps and 320kbps on classical music.

But for the CDs I listen to in my car, I really do not hear ANY difference between a 128kbps and the higher rates.

Am I deaf for the differences?
