Free Screen Recording Tool
Creating screen movies for your customers, your friends or your grandma could be a nice guesture or just necessary to get your message out to the world.
For us on tradebit, the screen movies helped a lot ot lower the amount of support requests and we used the BBFlashBack recoder for doing so. That software is around 199$, maybe too much for the grandma!
But there is one free tool I found while looking for alternatives, which does the job quite well, too: Wink 2.0 – it is a bit complicated to understand, but does what you need! It records the screen as single frames (pictures) and records your audio with it. After that process you might export the recording as Shockwave (Read: Flash) Movies to publish or mail around. It is not Open Source, but free!

There is another tool that is free – Abra from Sentryworks (http://www.sentryworks.com). I like the product better than Wink, and there seems to be a lot of people who say this has the best performance of ANY screen recording tool period. I find the product very easy to use and understand, and it outputs to SWF. Frankly, I find it easier to use and less impact to the desktop than pricey products such as Camtasia or Captivate. The only thing is the free version limits recordings to 2 min (which is fine for what most need anyway).

The best tool for me and is also an open source project is CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/). It gives you the option to record part of the screen, the screen or whole window and add audio to your records. You can also choose different outputs video formats and flash swf format too. And do not corrupt your system, with system files!

liteCam-liteRecorder can also record whatever you see on your screen as video with audio. And now it can be used on Vista.

Freez screen video capture v1.2 (http://www.smallvideosoft.com/download.php) is only 772kb. Installs quickly and easily. When capture starts, you drag the region to be captured, stops by pressing key and saving the avi to a location you want. Not the smallest capture, but you can change the frame rate and quality. Avi gives ease of playback. Another option to consider if you want to get going quickly.
