The best tool for me and is also an open source project is CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/). It gives you the option to record part of the screen, the screen or whole window and add audio to your records. You can also choose different outputs video formats and flash swf format too. And do not corrupt your system, with system files!

There is another tool that is free - Abra from Sentryworks (http://www.sentryworks.com). I like the product better than Wink, and there seems to be a lot of people who say this has the best performance of ANY screen recording tool period. I find the product very easy to use and understand, and it outputs to SWF. Frankly, I find it easier to use and less impact to the desktop than pricey products such as Camtasia or Captivate. The only thing is the free version limits recordings to 2 min (which is fine for what most need anyway).
