Mini-Tutorial: Free VPN setup with Putty (SAMBA Tunnel)
If you travel a lot, it could be important to access your files on your office file server. If you have a good admin (or if you have setup your own), you hopefully have a Linux file server with SAMBA setup and you allow SSH access to that server from the outside. Well, I do…
Now in the last weeks, I have been on the road a lot and needed some files from the server in my office. I was able to access those via a secure webserver, but it would be nice, if you can edit those files right in place, right?
So, I have played with putty, the free SSH client for windows and found the Tunnel Option in the configuration screen:

With that and the nice instructions from http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2004-May/085358.html it is very easy to setup a secure VPN access to your home office. You can also forward local ports to the remote webservers, if they are only available in your network there… very cool!
