The voice she's had for a lifetime. The confidence came later.
On her way to this album, Leah had to keep a sense of humor and pay her bills. She was a make up artist, a retail sales clerk, a design consultant, a secretary, a leasing consultant, a personal shopper, and a weekend wedding and corporate singer/entertainer. Good Lord!
As a 9 year old, Leah's singing shocked her parents. Her grade school teachers saw it as an opportunity to cast her in the lead role of "Annie." In High School, she was chosen as "Best Alto" for the California All-State Choir. Leah was quickly snapped up to tour internationally as a main soloist of "The Young Americans." When the tour ended, a friend suggested she audition for the nationally telecast PAX-TV's Star Search "Destination Stardom." She auditioned...and won (3) times including the Semi-Finals! Still timid to pursue singing full time, Leah became a professional makeup artist while she "gigged" on weekends as the lead singer for various Los Angeles casual bands.
In 2002, she and her husband Ross left the drama and hustle of Los Angeles and moved to the Lake Forest, California to get more involved in their church, Rick Warren's Saddleback Church. Within a year, Leah was asked to be the assistant to the musical director for the Saddleback Church Creative Arts Team. This position dramatically changed her relationship with Christ. She began to listen intently to His voice and not her own. She relied on His plan...not hers. Her faith and confidence grew as she started writing about her life experiences; soon creating her own original music and style. After 2 years, she believed God called her to leave her position to focus on her music career; full time. She started collaborating with fellow Christian musicians/producers Drew Hester and Gannin Arnold. (Drew frequently tours with Lisa Maria Presley and Gannin plays guitar for Taylor Hawkins.) Together, they have created a solid collection of country rock songs that are outspoken, foot stompiní and beautiful.
And if you're wondering if Leah has children...YES, the Lord blessed Ross and Leah Shafer this year with there new adoptive daughter Lauren Rae Shafer. She was born on May 3rd, 2006. Leah cut the cord and the doctors plopped Lauren right on her, it was a true miracle and blessings from the heavens. She is a treasure. Leah also has two dogs; Benz and Buster (her two other kids). We are one big happy family.
