REIS KEEPS A SULTRY GRASP ON OLD JAZZ STANDARDS
SIMPLY FAYE
Ask Faye Reis her age? Donât be silly. Sheâs not talking. âOld enough not to tell you,â she quips ever so kindly. âI have long hair â itâs all mine. I have my own teeth, and I weigh the same I weighed in high school,â she says. And she has another thing that hasnât changed over time: her lush, beautiful voice. âI wanna sing,â she says. âGod gave me a long, long time to do it.â
Though sheâs been living, working and singing in the central San Joaquin Valley for the past 25 years, she came from the era of smoky-voiced Hollywood jazz singers. After growing up in Fresno, Reis spent time recording in Hollywood with such singers as Lou Rawls and Sarah Vaughan. She used to open for Milton Berle; she appeared on Lawrence Welkâs show, and she spent time inside the famed Capitol Records building.
And that voice of hers still is as strong as ever, as she shows on âSimply Fayeâ, an 11-cut CD of jazz standards and favorites.
âI never wanted to do this to make money,â she says of the new CD. âI did it for my granddaughter, to leave it for her. What I hope to do is keep alive a style of music that a lot of people still appreciate.â
Lineup: Vince DiCiccio, arrangements and piano; Mike Dana, guitar; Nye Frederick Morton, bass; Jim Ganduglia, drums; Ron Catalano, tenor saxophone and flute; and Kevin Cearley, trumpet and flugelhorn.
Style: âIâd say a soft jazz â straight-ahead jazz as they say in the business,â Reis says.
Sales pitch: âIts good listening in terms of being able to kick back and listen to the soft jazz,â Reis says. âIf you like the old standards, thereâs plenty of them.â
Influences: âSarah Vaughan . . . and Sarah Vaughan,â Reis says, âI did a couple of albums with her; (even) before I had the privilege of working with her, I really looked up to her.â
Trivia: Reis once gave Lou Rawls gas money so they could take his car to a recording studio in Hollywood and record together. A picture of her and Rawls together last year at Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino is on the back of the CD.
It could be the soundtrack to: âSomething sexy,â she says. âSoft and sexyâ.
For sampling purposes: Go to her Cdbaby.com page at www.cdbaby.com/cd/fayelreis for audio samples.
Key tracks: â(Call It) Stormy Monday,â âI Thought About You,â and âYou Came A Long Way from St. Louis.â
Buy It: Online at www.Cdbaby.com
Cost: $12.98 online or $10 at her live performances.
