Spiky, occasionally mellow, 'Kinksy', lyrical pop music with guitars, violin, djembe and belting melodies.
4 MP3 Songs
POP: British Pop, POP: Beatles-pop
Details:
The âNew PCâ CD from Scotlandâs Flowers For Algernon is a blend of soaring melodies, â60s lyrical innocence and a New Wave attitude; the ingredients of the groupâs unique sound. The CD features four of the bandâs original songs â the poppy âNew PCâ, the summery âOptimismâ, the punky âBus Stopâ and the atmospheric âWeekend Womanâ.
The band take their name from the novella by Daniel Keyes about a mouse and a human who, in parallel, became flawed geniuses. Could the band be flawed geniuses? Maybe, but theyâre happy to let you decide that!
James Igoe (vocals/guitar), Nelson Wright (guitar/harmonica/djembe) and Fiona Thom (guitar/vocals) write the bandâs songs, individually and collectively. Lindsay Sugden (bass) and Nick Rowell (keyboards) complete the Flowersâ line up.
Flowers For Algernon have won awards at the Edinburgh-based Acoustic Idols in 2004 and 2005, played several shows during the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and recorded acclaimed sessions for local stations Festival FM and Leith FM.
Reviews:
âOne of the best pop bands in Edinburgh, if not all of Scotland"
[The Daily Record, January 2006]
âNew PC is a wonderful story of someone spending too much time on a new computer. Optimism has singer James Igoe in best old crooner mode with soaring melodies Belle & Sebastian-style⦠This certainly shows enough promise for them to be signed up.â
[The Daily Record, September 2005]
âAs good - if not better - than their peers Aberfeldy, their simple-to-follow folk-pop tunes come as a breath of fresh air to the Edinburgh music sceneâ.
