Five Style Fist is a hip-hop quintet deeply rooted in Denver, Colorado. They are an edgy experimental band with foundations tracing back to rap, rock, dub, and soul music. Their sound has hints of instrumentation reminisant to The Roots and a genre blending style that "treads on the hybrid trail blazed by 311" says Dave Herrera, of the Westword Newspaper.
Five Style Fist was born after a tour through Europe in 2000. The group consists of drummer Daniel Abe, bassist jDub, keyboardist Vernon Valdez, guitarist Justin Kay and emcee/singer Ichiban. Five Style Fist is notorious for their high energy live shows supported by a strong local fan base.
As of currently, Five Style Fist has independently released 2 studio albums, Ambient Frequencies released in July of 2003 and their most recent March 2005 release of, left right in the middle. The new CD showcases 15 tracks and over 73 minutes of music. A successful CD release party brought together over eleven-hundred people at the Gothic Theater, a venue with a capacity of 900.
Recently Five Style Fist was also a finalist on the regionally syndicated Lewis and Floorwax Last Band Standing contest on 103.5 KRFX. FSF appeared live on the radio for nearly two weeks and on multiple episodes of Masters TV on the Comcast cable network.
On the strength of the release of their new album and recent surge of local and internet popularity,
Five Style Fist is breaking out of Colorado with plans to tour the Midwest and West Coast this summer.
