Great
For INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE players. A video tutorial focused on "Upper Octave Boogie," an original composition by Adam Gussow.
Every blues harmonica player needs a range of ways of "carrying" the 12-bar changes on the instrument. This song is specifically designed to expand the player's ability to work the upper octave of the diatonic instrument. For most blues players, including some professionals, this is a sorely under-utilized element. Gussow shows you a basic boogie-woogie line, takes it through the I and IV chords in the first 8 bars, then shows you a logical AND innovative way of strongly suggesting the V/IV cadence in bars 9 and 10.
Technical challenges include the alternate-note tonguing required to create a boogie-woogie groove, the tight embouchure needed to hold a series of high notes without tiring, and several blow bends (on 8 and 9 blow) which will be too difficult for ADVANCED BEGINNERS, although the rest of the song is something they can accomplish with sufficient practice.
Harp key: C
Note: a PDF tab for this lesson is also available:
