Details:
This untested and veteran US male rap equip from St. Louis, Missouri comprises Skip (b. Jason Pettus, St. Louis, Missouri), Jax (b. James Hill, Kansas City, Missouri), and Tronn (b. Chris Jackson, St. Louis, Missouri). These three rap junkies tended to the same high school in St. Louis where they had a good mix of influences from the hip-hop world. Skip and Jax started out as part of the Black Knights, with Trace (b. Jason Guyton, St. Louis, Missouri) and the Duke (b. William Dailey, St. Louis, Missouri), and were given their name by producer extraordinaire C-Natural (b. Christopher Smith, St. Louis, MO.). C-Natural, whose father Michael LoveSmith wrote for the Jackson Five ("All I Do Is Think Of You") as well as other Motown greats, formed the group with four of what he considered his top rap talent. C-Natural, or C-Nat for short, provided all of the hip-hop production for the untested crew as well as producing, writing, and performing his own r & b cuts. Following their 1995 promotional debut, "Exit the Dungeon", the Black Knights decided to go their separate paths. Skip and Jax went on to do solo projects as well as compilations with other local artists. Working with the likes of St. Louis based hip hop blazers Sham of TRACK STARS (Chingy) and the Black Hole, as well as, now new and upcoming producer Jay Brown ("Guilty"-Swizz Beats, "She like" -54th Platoon), the crew put together a slew of projects. These projects include The Lab (1996), Journey Thru Rhyme (1997), Black Knight compilation (1996), After Dark compilation (1999), 3000: Futuristic Vibes (1998), Journey Thru Rhyme: The Sequel (1999), as well as other various projects. Journey thru Rhyme: The Sequel represented the first store-released album for the camp. The album was released through Blue Sky Distribution (St. Louis company that distributes St. Louis music to predominantly St. Louis-based stores). Indicative of the title, Journey Thru Rhyme was an album that gave its listeners every different facet of hip-hop though based in the refined jazz/hip hop cross-match. Featuring the songs "The Truth", "Get Naked", and "The Flow", the album did relatively well in local stores despite the limited distribution and marketing of the album. Adding more exposure for the group, "The Flow" worked its way into the regular rotation at many local college radio stations throughout Missouri. Inspired by the 3000: Futuristic Vibes album, Skip, Jax, and Tronn went on to form the group 3000 (aka Urban Prep Club). The first album by this newly formed hit factory was "Shock Da Planetary." This album presented a more commercial sound for the historically abstract underground hip-hop group. This release consisted of the well received radio cuts "My God" and "Ridin' High", as well as the songs "Fa Sho'", "Passion Fruit", and "State of Hip hop" which stayed true to their underground following. The album featured many of the local artist that had been worked with before such as ROT (Reign of Thought-Kansas City artists: J Scott, Joe Jeff, J Jones, and Soldiah), as well as new St. Louis artists: VP (one of Skip's artist), r & b crooner JC, and Angel. Each member of the group brought a distinct sound to the table. Skip, with 10 years of rapping under his belt, provided much of the production for the album as well as playing co-lead rapper of 3000. His undeniable versatility as a producer is demonstrated by the laid back track "Passion Fruit" (a la "Slum Village") to the up tempo "My God" (a la Cash Money Records). On the mic, his authoritative delivery fits well with Jax's laid-back attack. Jax, aka Jimi Stylz or Mayhem, has a role that essentially is the lead rapper in the group. Mayhem, who hangs his hat on being a "jack of all rhymes (trades)", can be heard ferociously attacking the track on "Shock da Planetary" but yet at times be ultra laid back such is the case on "My God" (a la Jay-Z or Mase), his only solo song on the album. He has also dappled in production at times but prefers to concentrate his attention on delivering the "heat" as he likes to call it. Tronn provides much of the gritty and underground sound to the group. His influences such as DJ Premier and RZA can be heard throughout his productions but yet still has been able to develop his own unique style to match his abstract image. On the latest release, Tronn produces four tracks including the album's hidden gem "Fa Sho." This album was also put in Missouri stores but this time was self-distributed to the local record stores. Most of the recent work by the group has also been for sell through the often-used haven for local unsigned groups, cdbaby.com. "My God" was later used in a short film "Rancho Cucamonga", independently written and directed by a rising University of Southern California Film student, Rebecca Cutter. Currently, Jax resides in Los Angeles, CA. shopping the groups work for a group record deal as well as getting into the writing side of things for currently established artists. He also is presently working on new material with St. Louis producer, Obscene (former DJ partner of Nelly producer Jay E), New York producer, Mix, and long time music partner C-Nat. Skip, in St. Louis, is shopping his music to local artists, as well as, to publishing companies, labels, and established rappers in the industry. Tronn, also in St. Louis, is producing new artists and shopping his music locally. The group is working on a new project to be shopped for a recording deal.
