JAZZ: Smooth Jazz, EASY LISTENING: Mood Music

Details:
As the title states, Dave Croston puts into music his impressions of urban life from the perspective of a seasoned R & B instrumentalist. A city's diversity of character and moods are well represented here. There are driving Afro/Cuban and Latin rhythms, good old fashioned Funk and Blues grooves, high society sophistication and some down home Southern Gospel. Dave wrote, arranged and produced all ten cuts, as well as played much of the accompaniment tracks himself. But- there is also a fair sized list of guest players and singers who add their own distinctive touches. All the while Dave's smooth guitar stylings weave their way through a landscape of shifting emotions and tone colors, resulting in a listening experience that is focused and complete.

Harvey Siders, former long-time critic for Downbeat magazine writes: "...within the ten tracks of Pulse of the City can be heard the 'Jazz flavored R&B' that Croston claims as his signature sound; occassional unison bop lines; out and out blues; four Cynthia Boggs, thanks to vocal overdubbing; even a "Street Fair" replete with steel drums - a happy track likely to get the most airplay from radio programmers who won't find it easy to pidgeonhole this CD."

The Artist

Dave Croston, 49, is a veteran player whose career has spanned 3 decades. Starting on violin at age 9, he switched to guitar in his early teens. Majoring in music composition and theory in college, he aquired the skills to quickly learn bass, keyboards and saxophone; then hit the road - usually winding up being the musical director of the bands he played with for many years to come.

When affordable good quality recording gear came into the music stores in the late 80s, Dave returned to Tacoma, Washington and opened a small studio. Catering to singers and songwriters, his self-taught engineering and producing skills kept him very busy while priming him for his next career move. "I knew very early on," he said, "that my ultimate goal was to write and record my own guitar music. But the level of competency required to be competitive in this musical arena was pretty stiff. So I took my time and built up ten years of experience producing, arranging and writing for others before I felt completely confident putting out a product with my name on it."

Dave continues to provide his studio services to the local music community. His debut CD "Pulse of the City" is well worth the wait - check it out here on CD Baby!
