STRAP IN!! THIS RIDE IS AWESOME!!! It is a well known fact that Native Americans have always treated Veterans with the utmost respect and admiration. Even when the rest of the country was turning its collective back on returning Vietnam Veterans, Native Americans honored them, and held them in high esteem. This appreciation for Veterans has so moved Native Americans, that songs (called Veterans songs), have been written in their honor, praising their war-time exploits (i.e. Ponca Vietnam Veterans Song and the Kiowa Desert Storm Song, etc.)
It should therefore, come as no surprise that music honoring Veterans should be written in the Native American flute genre. Gary "Cornsmoke" LaCorte has created a flute album doing just that! "Freedom Saviors" is LaCorte's homage to ALL Veterans and POW/MIAs. Start to finish, Cornsmoke's combination of flute playing, sound effects, drums and synthesizers, is a extremely strong musical narrative! This is a powerful and emotional statement, which is bound to evoke a response from Veterans and non-Veterans alike. This is inspired music!
The opening track "At The Dawn Of Time," pulls you into the mix and wastes no time in creating the musical enviroment of the soldier/warrior. The mood is continued in "Inside of You," rewarding the listener with a lush, musical landscape. There are two cuts on side one, though it flows so well, it is hard to distinguish between one and the next. Side Two continues the aural onslaught, with melodic gems like, "Lost Patrol," and "Down The Ho-Chi-Minh." The whole album comes together in the final selection, "American Trilogy," a salutory selection for ALL Veterans. Even for the non-patriotic, this is hard stuff to resist!
Cornsmoke's "Freedom Saviors" is his best work to date. This album is creative, well-written and all those things that make an album great! Pick this up at your next pow-wow.
