A Rock based suite of music about my ancestors and the Irish Potato Famine.
20 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Folk Rock, BLUES: Guitar Blues
Details:
Tom Cowley is a guitarist, songwriter/composer and performer who lives in the North East of England, and who has played in many bands and as a solo artist over the years.
The Gypsy Suite is about my ancestors who came to England during the Irish Potato Famine of the 19th Century, and I was moved to write a suite of music about that time and their leaving of their country to begin a new life in the North East of England. The whole suite is rock guitar-based and I wrote and performed the whole of it myself, playing the various instruments that you hear - guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, mandolin, all voices, narrative and singing, and recorded and produced the CD at my own studios called GypsyKateStudios. The story follows the Kilcooley family as they are evicted from their farm and home in the West of Ireland, and their journey along the roads as travellers until they board a ship to England and a new life. There is a mixture of instrumental, narrative and vocal tracks which combine to form a coherent whole, the story of a family forced to leave their home and seek their future in a new country.
Since 2002, when I had radical surgery for Prostate Cancer and survived, all the money I make from my writings and recordings has gone into Prostate Cancer Research, and will continue to do so.
