A high country lookout, hanging precariously over both sides of a paper thin ridge. A mountain looming across a narrow canyon; we were close enough to hear bits of rock crumbling off the glaciers. I set my pack down and read the note on the door in disbelief; the lookout was open, and offered any travellers the place to spend the night.
My brother and I lugged our gear inside, grinning at our good fortune.

We ate by candlelight- it couldn't have been otherwise- and our faces reflected dimly off the windows which encircled us. I cupped my hands to the glass. Outside, a full moon danced with the hills. The snow gleamed as if lit from beneath. Ethereal.

All nights in the high country are special, but this was of the kind that comes back to you on bitter winter nights when you dream of the mountains and places far away.

This night, and others like it, are the songs I offer here-my attempt to capture light in a jar. Most of the lyrics were born in the hills of Mount Rainier, a national park in Washington state. But there is something universal in the wilderness experience; something that robs you of your breath when you venture back to the garden, and stare in wonder at the art of God.

So as you sit back and listen to these songs, I hope that you find something stirring within you. The smell of the warm earth? The deep blue of the lupine? The hand of your lover in yours under the endless blue? John Muir pleaded with us to, "Come to the mountains and hear their glad tidings." I hope these songs take you there.
