CAROLINA SOUL, The Spirit Records Anthology

This anthology contains all of the soul/R&B/blues singles from Spirit Recordsâfirst 20 years (1980-2000).

Represented are all of the Spirit artists from this period including Debby Dobbins, Sonja Grier, Maria Howell, The Pelicans, Bradford & Bell, and the Groove Doctors. In short, this is a âjam-packedâ compilation of all of the singles that became hits on regional, national, and international levels, and which charted on radio and in clubs.

The early Spirit singles by Bradford & Bell and The Pelicans have a ârootsâ R&B/blues feel that enjoyed much success with radio and club DJâs on the Carolinaâs & southeastern US coast. In fact, â(They Call It) Mr. Dollarâsâ, the labelâs debut 1980 release by Bradford & Bell, was an âout-of-the-boxâ regional hit.

Then the evolution of Spiritâs sound took a big leap later that year with the release of Debby Dobbinsâ debut single, the smooth and soulful âHow You Gonnaâ Feelâ, which charted first in the southeastern US, then leapt âacross the pondâ to remain a ânorthern soulâ classic to this day in the UK. 1981 saw the second Debby Dobbins release, âGlad I Found Youâ, which promptly charted on over 100 stations. Her third release, âCanât Help This Feelinâ, considered her biggest hit, charted on 165 stations and propelled her to Hollywood and worldwide TV performance of the song on Star Search.

1987 brought international success to the Charlotte, NC based label with the release of âLove Flight 109â, a blistering dance floor classic delivered here by Maria Howell, which became a top twenty international dance hit for Sonja Grier.

These are just a few highlights from the 17 songs included on the CD which can be sampled by clicking at the left of this page. With this anthology, the musical evolution, and geographical reach of the Spirit label is evidenced and documented over itâs first 20 years.
