M'Liss sings volumes, with spare pointed lyrics, backed up by phat, swampy beats and irrestible hooks.
13 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Roots Rock, ROCK: Americana
Details:
The three qualities that most define the music of MâLiss Calzaretta are previewed in her unusual first name: Rhythmic, clean and wildly original. As a songwriter, MâLiss sings volumes with spare, pointed lyrics--- âThereâs been no let up to my let down / No help to make me sane / No hand outs for my hunger / Iâm never gonna be the sameâ--- backed up by phat, swampy beats and irresistible hooks. As a singer MâLiss has a range that evokes such disparate influences as Janis Joplin and Dave Matthews, but it is her vocal mastery of the âblue noteâ in surprising contexts that distinguishes her voice from all others.
Quite simply, her music bursts in your ears!
As a seasoned performer who is now capturing well-earned kudos from critics and the public alike, MâLiss was selected as one of the 200 local acts to appear during the prestigious 2004 French quarter Festival in New Orleans in April. In November of 2003 MâLiss was featured in the invitation only Singer Songwriter Showcase produced by Jay Fallo at the New Orleans House of Bluesâ Parish Room, and played the Spotted Cat on New Orleans' hot new music strip. Radio station WWOZ also picked up on MâLiss and began playing cuts from her upcoming CD to great response.
Other high profile gigs include playing to full houses at Nightstage and the Middle East and to a sold out crowd in February of 2003 at the Original House of Blues, all in Cambridge, MA. She has appeared on the acclaimed Women in Music show on WERS IN Boston, and was selected as a featured artist for a compilation CD of New England singers and songwriters, Sounds of New England, Vol. l, which has upped her national and international exposure. Prior to forming her current band, MâLissâ credentials include opening for Roseanne Cash, Dave Mason, Indigo Girls and Tracy Chapman. She has also toured extensively both nationally and internationally in Amsterdam, Paris and Montreal, winning over audiences as a solo artist in intimate clubs and wowing large outdoor festival crowds with her full band.
A seven song preview CD was released in connection with the French Quarter Festival entitled âMâLiss.â The complete CD due in early 2005 will feature mixes done by Dale Ramsey and Joey P. of Rambro Productions in Atlanta. This follow-up to her 2002 recording, âDodging Demons, â has the polish and POW that follows the reputation of the engineering gurus of Rambro Productions.
Born into a musical family---her grandfather played drums behind the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong---MâLiss was raised in New England and New Orleans. And, as different as gumbo is from clam chowder, so too are the influences that have shaped her talents. But, in the stir-fry that is MâLiss, what a wonderful banquet it is!
