Flutist Julie Scolnikâs tonal enchantment and exquisite communicative gifts have captivated audiences across the United States and abroad. The Boston Globe has written that "she plays with an urgency full of fire that melts into disarming delicacy," and French critics have praised "her vast palette of sultry colors and magical phrasing." Scolnik has enjoyed a diverse musical career as a soloist, orchestral flutist, and chamber musician. As a guest flutist at festivals across the U.S. and France, Ms. Scolnik has collaborated with countless world-class artists and chamber groups that include the Brentano, Lydian and Borromeo String Quartets. She is an active soloist in the U.S. and in France she offers an annual fall recital at the Salle Cortot in Paris and in festivals of Provence during the summer.  
Fanfare magazine has written of Scolnik's recent CD, "Bejeweled-encore gems for flute and harp, " that [Scolnik's] tone is voluptuous in its low registers and pellucid at the top of its compass. She also has the ability to vary it, smoothly and effortlessly, on a single sustained note or in the case of a passage as the music requires. The 2010-11 season marks Ms Scolnik's fourteenth year as artistic director of Andover Chamber Music, a series which has brought her accolades for her imaginative programming and for the personal connection she establishes with her audiences.  (www. AndoverChamberMusic.org) In earlier years, Ms. Scolnik performed as principal flute with many of Boston's leading orchestras including Emmanuel Music, The Boston Ballet, and Lyric Opera, and toured and recorded with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Scolnik is a frequent featured guest on Boston's WGBH radio, having made over three dozen radio appearances. She lives in Andover, Massachusetts, with her husband, physicist Michael Brower, and two children, Sophie and Alexander (Sasha), also musicians.

When my daughter  Sophie was little, I never assumed that she would share my love of music or follow in my footsteps. But I remember the day I realized that music could make her go weak in the knees.  My seven-year-old and I were baking cookies and listening to a Brahms piano trio. Suddenly there was a disarming harmonic change, and she turned to me, spoon in hand, with a facial expression that until then I had only seen when she was tasting Lindt chocolate. Thatâs when I knew.  

The pleasure of preparing this CD with Sophie was about so much more than the gratification of knowing that she had become a musician in her own right. It lay in the realization that we share the same passion, one that we can now express together through our playing. 

After reading through piles of music during her weeks at home on winter break from college, our sessions interspersed with snacks and walks in the snow, we chose this collection of short concert pieces, all of which are songs of love. Many, like the Mompou and Schumann songs, are heartrending and mournful. Others, like Elgarâs âChanson de Matinâ and Mendelssohnâs âContemplation,â we love for their bittersweetness, which lingers delicately between tears and happiness. With the exception of Capletâs âReverie,â none of the works was originally composed for flute and piano; most are arrangements that we made together from solo piano works, violin pieces, and art songs.

In years to come, when I remember our first collaboration, I will see my daughter at the  piano, her graceful hands poised above the keyboard,  watching and listening for my first intake of breath.
