Music is truly in Cynthia Jordan's blood. Her grandfather was a talent scout for Irving Berlin, and her grandmother was a nightclub entertainer. The whole family must be very proud of Cynthia, who produces great instrumental ambiance music by playing classical/new age piano with passion and style. On Christmas Celebration, her wonderful piano music is augmented by woodwinds, violin, and cello. The result is very lovely indeed.

Let's start with something superficial--the album cover. Christmas Celebration features a gorgeous portrait of the holy mother and child. Even more interestingly (from a music reviewer's perspective), the artist's name appears nowhere on the front or spine of the jewel box. And when her name appears on the back and in the liner notes, she is simply identified as "Cynthia." Perhaps this is like the "Cher" or "Madonna" phenomenon, or perhaps she is simply shy about her abundant musical expertise.

No matter--Cynthia's Christmas Celebration does provide cause to celebrate, presenting ten moving pieces. About half of these are well-known traditional carols; Cynthia's elaborate arrangements are both elegant and simple. She also includes several original compositions that fit naturally into the seasonal mix. Although her piano alone is outstanding, the addition of woodwinds, violin, and cello does heighten the experience, providing a more textured and multi-layered musical landscape. My favorite tracks include the longer, fully-developed pieces such as the exquisite opening "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and the exotic "Joseph's Dream."
