Details:
The Cherry Tempo live in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Not really big fish in a small pond, but fish out of water, completely out of their element in a town used to listening to the blues, cover bands and house music, with barely a shadow of a rock scene in sight. After graduation it is nearly impossible to be young and afford to live in Santa Fe. Which is why Javier was so obliged to stay when the apartment deal of a lifetime literally fell onto his lap. He wanted to move to Seattle. His boss wanted him to move to Indianapolis, somehow stubbornness or fate intervened.
Dave was looking for a place as different from east coast city living as possible. His girlfriend had friends in New Mexico, and on a whim they packed up their belongings and drove west, having never been past the Mississippi.
Will, weary from a lengthy trip in Europe and fleeing the impending prospect of a domestic life, bought a bus ticket from Flagstaff AZ to Santa Fe planning to stay a couple of weeks to visit his aunt and uncle.
Jasper was desperately trying to complete a degree with no end to the torturous mundane art school curriculum in sight. With his last band defunct for over a year, he needed music like toast needs jam.
When Javier found the only capable musicians in town who knew who the hell My Bloody Valentine was, and he knew that he should stick around.
The four gentleman who formerly didnât know the other from Adam had fallen into each others laps and effortlessly played together like itâd been forever.
There might be something in the water or in the majestic daily sunsets that make some young residents of New Mexico to craft quality music. James Mercer (The Shins), Aaron Turner (Hydrahead Records, Isis, Old Man Gloom), Zack Condon (Beirut), Cory Murchy and Alex Rose (Minus The Bear) all grew up in Northern New Mexico. There is something that has compelled Javier, Dave, Jasper and Will to stick around and try to swim in the evaporating waters.
The results come in a pink self-titled disc. Tracked in a breakneck studio weekend in September 2005 with the help of Transduction Studios Owner/Engineer Brian Kennedy, and tediously tweaked, overdubbed and mixed for another 9 months on a laptop in Javierâs bedroom. The final 10 songs were mastered by Sterling Sound Alumni Adrian Morgan at Blumlien Studios in Brooklyn. A cohesive yet stylistically eclectic and dense offering, clocking in at a mere 35 minutes, ranging from the pop stylings of Superchunk to The Replacements to The Zombies to New Order itâs obvious that these boys arenât in the game of chasing the next big sound, they are grounded in the knowledge that great songs are king and timelessness is a virtue.
