jeff palmer and greg freeman

our story begins with the "dub fodder" project begun in 1996 at lowdown recording in san francisco. one day of recording drum kit, bass guitar, oscillator, 12-bit samples of reggae keyboards, clavinet and spinet piano onto two-inch sixteen-track analog tape was stretched into three years of dub manipulations, varispeed slowdowns, speedups, slices and splices. mixes from these sessions and other tracks were released on "from the beginning of the world until the end of time throughout the known universe" on onitor and box kite in 2000.

we started bringing in computers, synths and more samplers at this point, partly as a result of our need to create a live environment. once we got things hooked up and working, checksum started performing shows beginning in san francisco and germany in 2000.

we now live in two different cities, and have migrated to using logic audio alongside our many other analog friends like the akg bx-10 spring reverb. we strive to create organic atmospheres and feel that the intersection of analog randomness and digital control is a perfect way to get there.

oh yeah, we almost forgot: "checksum" is a term related to the error correction schemes needed for digital reproductions of an analog event.

szene magazine [hamburg, germany june 2000] "sounds to a nocturnal walk by a san francisco wrapped in nebulas. somehow terribly, somehow fascinatingly."

echo online magazine [japan 2000] "The cliche the pickpocket it passes through also the warm sound space and treatment of the drum."
