Details:
Chrissy Flatt's first recording, 2002âs âWings of a Butterfly,â was described by Rolling Stone contributor Richard Skanse in Texas Music as âsimply put, the best debut by an unknown singer-songwriter (heâd) ever heard.â The album caught critics, DJs and listeners by surprise, taking on subjects dark and vulnerable - specifically, exploring her unconventional upbringing in Waco, Texas after her fathers death - with a music-biz outsiderâs hopeful innocence. Magnetâs Robert Baird called the songs âgutsyâ, San Antonio Express-News writer Jim Beal praised her âplain-spoken way with wordsâ, and Third Coastâs John Conquest noted her âone of Austinâs most promising young musiciansâ as the CD reached # 22 in that magazineâs esteemed âFreeform American Rootsâ radio chart.
The troubled climate of 2004 brings her follow up âWalk With Kings.â Without the element of surprise in her corner this time, the hard working songwriter delivers a challenging, more focused effort. Reuniting the basic crew from her first album, âWalk With Kingsâ is built on a foundation of 60âs rockânâroll essentials, framed by rootsy sensibilities and dressed with tasteful orchestrations. The group (Ron Flynt-bass/ keyboards/vocals, Stephen Belans- drums/percussion, Eric Hisaw-guitar, Brian Standefer-cello) led by Ms. Flattâs driving rhythm guitar, plays it leaner and meaner this time with the confidence to let the songs soar.
The songs themselves push in new directions, taking on topics increasingly at the front and center of our daily lives. Inspired in part by her WWII veteran father, âCame Back Brokenâ looks into the world of a living victim of war. âSign up Hereâ challenges apathy and blind allegence. âMurder in the Gardenâ is a crime scene parable for the growing animal rights movement, while âAlmost Famousâ addresses the character and self-esteem casualties sometimes left behind in the lonely battle for acceptance. The more introspective songs take a deep and soulful look at loss (âReach Out Your Handâ) and longing (âI Canât Love Youâ), rejection (âCold Dayâ) and rejecting (âFurther Awayâ and âMadmanâ). The most revealing track may be Ms. Flattâs take on Ray Daviesâ Kinks classic âIâm Not Like Everybody Elseâ where she and her bandâs rootsy-garage-chamber-rock make the song their own. Song for song, "Walk With Kings" is a darker, harder and all-together more mature and confident record than her first â though, as the title track's joyous celebration of the wonders of a love spanning multiple lifetimes makes clear, Flatt's music still reveals the same spirit of innocence that made her debut so beguiling.
Chrissy Flatt hit the ground running with her 2002 debut and âWalk With Kingsâ shows no signs of slowing the pace. The Austin born songstressâ second release has already racked up an immpressive collection of reviews and radio play while expanding her touring base. The Memphis Flyerâs Chris Davis called Chrissyâs vocals âbeautifully twangyâ and her writing âbreathtakingâ , while the Austin Chronicleâs Margaret Moser gave her singing and writing skills the âGirlie-Action seal of approval.â Chrissy will be touring to promote âWalk With Kingsâ as well as working on a studio-collaboration with members of her band.
