Sometimes itâs the furthest branches that produce the ripest fruit, and Joel Lightmanâs journey toward success has seen him reach both high and far. From London, England, to Toronto, Canada, Joelâs journey has never been less than eventful.
It started with singer/songwriter Joel, cranking out classics in the bar of Londonâs Savoy Hotel. The boyâs got class, theyâd say, but the tedium of playing endless afternoon sets for the casually rich and shameless was beginning to take its toll. He wanted more. He wanted out.
Encouraged by some music industry contacts, Joel cut the Savoy gig, sold the case of stolen jewels he had buried in the garden and got the hell out of dodge. Arriving in Toronto, Joel began playing solo gigs immediately: honing his sound, sharpening his lyrics, pummelling the piano with a craftsmanâs vengeance. Joelâs influences range far and wide, from the composers of the roaring twenties through to Ben Folds Five. And as the songs developed â the warmth of his voice rising to match the casual elegance with which he hammers those keys â he knew his sound was becoming unique.
Then one night at a gig, Joel bumped into Ryan Sullivan, who offered to play drums, also recommending long-time collaborator Rory Sills on guitar. Just one problem: said guitarist was currently living a two-minute walk from Joelâs old place back in London. Small world.
But several phone calls and listening sessions later, all three of them knew this band was meant to happen. Rory packed his things, just as Joel had done some weeks earlier, and left behind the eloquent smog of London for Toronto.
The trio honed the songs with endless hours of rehearsal, developing the on-stage telepathy that makes the three of them such a powerfully engaging live act.
And now, some serious quality time in the studio with acclaimed producer George Seara (50 Cent, Sting, Chris Robinson) brings you Every Street Corner, the extraordinary new album by the Joel Lightman band. Joel has travelled far and wide to develop his songs, hone his art and find the perfect band of fellow musicians. As this album proves, it was well worth the journey.
