Whether you are a proponent of intense trunk-rattlers or sentimental deep tracks, Jozand & Ice Cold Productionâs album Unexpected satisfies rap aficionados of all varieties.
Produced mostly by ICPâs tandem Thai and DSUH, Spring Creek Recordâs first album offers an original sound born in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. The producers show vast diversity, as exemplified by tracks as different as the retrospective âLookinâ for the Signsâ to the upbeat club anthem âDatâz How We Roll.â DSUHâs elaborate piano and string work can be found throughout the album, along with his tendency to scratch tracks to perfection. Thai uses a plethora of different sounds, highlighted by his magnificent performances on the funky âWe Gonâ Rideâ and the truly emotional âLife Is A.â Jozand also steps in producing a couple of tracks and helping on a few others. A notable song is â1 Of a Kindâ where Jozandâs smooth whistle meshes perfectly with DSUHâs thumping kicks.
Jozand, a gifted emcee born and raised in State College, Pennsylvania, has already contributed one solo album and one group effort (Central PA and The Groove Theory). At the modest age of 17, he has mastered the art of writing polished lyrics, as exemplified on the lead single âThey Donât Knowâ:
Whatâs up DSUH/
Letâs keep it true/
Throw it back to relevance/
Extract the elements/
Of the track, excel in it/
If that, weâll be sellinâ it/
Iâll be on standby, man I, am flyâ¦
Jozand grabs a mic and does nothing other than/
Wreck it, so respect it, we make ear drums shudder man/
You hear âem stutterinâ? Yeahâ¦Thatâs another win.
Creativity and humor can be found in one-liners (âItâs Jozand, itâs time for respect my man/ âcause things are goinâ north like a humvee full of Mexicansâ) and in extended metaphors (âLife threw a curveball at me and now my batting helmetâs dented/ I constantly swing and miss, struck out plenty times/ feeling worse than I could express, in any rhymeâ). Jozandâs straight forward style of pronouncing every syllable in words draws attention to all of the subtle touches in his writing.
Unexpected features a slew of talented guest artists, including Spring Creekâs own Jack Tyson, Big Slim, Young Dude, Tammingeye and Black President. CKnatt and Lilâ Danny from Trillion Cut Recordz also stop by for memorable performances.
All and all, for its considerably cheap price, Unexpected is an extremely worthy investment of your money. If you like original beats with kick, itâs got that. If you like innovative lyrics with unsurpassed structure, itâs got that. No matter what you appreciate, it will exceed your expectations.
