Details:
John Tabacco (thatâs his real name and he doesnât even smoke) is a composer, singer, engineer, multi instrumentalist, and graphic artist. He is co-founder of SA3 (the cutting edge in analog to digital conversion technology for sound and video) and has engineered /mixed and mastered music for hundreds of New York recording artists as well as projects released on BMG: The Kemelions, RCA : Faze, Rampage/Rhino : Rhett Forrester, Columbia : Rebbie Jackson, Rykodisc : Bob Marley, Gold City/Sony : Chris Jasper, Electra : Sonia Dada
He is the CEO of It Iz What It Iz Music Publishing which currently holds over 500 songs in it's catalog.
His music background consists of extensive study of orchestration with noted 20th century composer John Lessard, harmony with the late electronic music maverick Bulent Arel and composition with Canadian composer Mike Bushnell and the head of the Stony Brook University music department, Professor Peter Winkler.
In 1989 Tabacco was involved in the creation of the 12" single Go House Yourself. This single (a parody on acid house music with a glorious chain saw solo in it) went to Number 39 on Billboardâs Retail Dance Sales Chart in November of 1989. In Italy it went to number 9 on the charts. A cheesy hand held video of the song went to number one in Puerto Rico in and around the same time.
In 1992 his music was featured in a few episodes of Nickleodeonâs âAre You Afraid Of The Dark?â
In 1999, Tabacco co-produced and arranged the CD Re-Inventing The Wheel with ex-Zappa guitarist/ author Nigey Lennon. This collaboration garnered a favorable covered story in the New York Times (March 2001) and brought Tabacco to the attention of master big band arranger Ed Palermo. Subsequently Tabacco sang lead vocals from 2000-2003 with the Ed Palermo Big Band. The group performed many successful concerts at NYC's The Bottom Line until the club was shut down.
Summer of 2002 saw Tabacco, along with Nigey Lennon and Frank Zappa's sister, Candy Zappa, fronting a band at the famed Zappanale in Bad Dobern, East Germany. With some classic Zappa numbers and many Tabacco originals the group's performances were well received by the European crowd.
In 2003 Tabacco arranged music for Sony mega - producer Corey Rooney and his brother Jeff for projects involving, Toni Braxton and her sister Tamar.
Also in that year Tabacco signed an independent record deal with Blake Seal's company sumthindiffrent.com. The company released a re-working of the JT CD It's Out There Feeding On Itself under the title: Realized @ 21 Walnut. The CD has garnered many positive reviews on the web.
In August 2005 Tabacco sang lead vocals for famed composer / conductor David Amram in the VH1 sponsored âBeatles Magical Orchestra: a young personâs guide to the orchestraâ. This successful event will be performed again at 5 Towns College on Long Island, on April 8th, 2006.
Currently Tabacco is producing Long Island singer, song writer, folk legend Cathy Kreger. Release date for Cathyâs CD is projected in the summer of 2006(www.cathykreger.com). He's also had the privilege to master The new Ed Palermo Big Band CD "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" coming out in May 2006.
Like an unfolding musical diary / puzzle, Tabaccoâs music and art are constantly being re-worked, juxtaposed and intertwined. They reflect the happenings going on in his life at the moment. Studio recordings are constantly in progress. His style is a melding of pop-jazz-rock-avant garde/aleatory, classical and comedy. A feature in Keyboard Magazineâs Discoveries column (issue 1/88) lists his main musical influences as: The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, The Firesign Theatre, Thelonious Monk, Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Stravinsky and his small group of musical collaborators.
