Details:
From a childhood spent overhearing his father write hymns on the piano in the living room to recently playing traditional folk music with refugees in Macedonia, Stephen Johns has found music to be a powerful tool for change. His travels have taken him from Canadaâs fertile flatlands to Kosovoâs burned cities and he has found the seed for a song in every Greyhound station and military checkpoint along the way.
Inspired to write songs after witnessing an incendiary performance by Stephen Fearing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Stephen took up the steel string acoustic guitar. Classically trained, he has a voice that can echo the growl of a distant train or mirror the intensity of a single engine plane flying into the wind.
After touring Canada with the Fringe Festival, Stephen has been seen on stages across the country from Hamilton to Victoria. He has performed live on the A Channel Big Breakfast and UMFM campus Radio, and has been featured on CBC Radioâs Culture Shock.
Stephen has become a sought after song co-writer in his hometown of Winnipeg, with writing credits on albums by Manitoba Hal, Jaylene Johnson and Stuart & Russell. His debut album, Seven Songs, has just been released, and is available through McNally Robinson Bookstores, The Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store, and CD Baby.com.
âWith a voice that shakes the rafters and a heart wide enough to communicate a vast array of emotions, Stephen Johns is poised to become a powerful presence on the folk stageâ Jaylene Johnson
âStephen can write a song that makes you cry because youâre sad, and he can write another that makes you cry because youâre laughing so hard. Big man, big voice, big heart.â Chris Freeman
âStephen Johns has been winning fans wherever he goes. He writes wonderful songs.â Hal Brolund
