The program presented on this recording was developed under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation. The scenes presented are images that describe, in all its complexity, the human impulse of love. In nature we see the transformation of life through loss and renewal. Out of our own fading youth, love transforms us from a sense of longing to rapture; uncertainty to stability; anguish to serenity.

The Robert Louis Stevenson poem, "Youth and Love, describes a determined youth leaving his beloved as he ventures into the world. The poem serves as the inspiration for this recording. Through the written words and musical phrases presented, the recital program ventures from the freedom and exuberance of youth and love, along the inevitable path of discovery, loss, renewal, and the yearning for eternal fulfillment.

Shakespeare reminds us in one of these texts that âyouthâs a stuff will not endure.â Therefore, it should be our purpose to seek out something that does.
