Details:
I was born in Edinburgh in 1980 and we immigrated to South Africa in '82'. I grew up in Durban which is situated on the east coast of South Africa. We lived in a suburb of Durban called Glenwood. I attended Glenwood Junior, Park View and Glenwood High School. I left Glenwood High at the age of 16 and started a correspondence course; it was here in that solitude that I realised I had a passion for music. I was able to vent my emotions in an art form I knew nothing about.
All my frustrations and joys where taken out on paper, a Dictaphone and my acoustic guitar.
I grew up near the ocean and this is where I spent my youth surfing/Bodyboarding up and down the South African coast. Music was only what I heard on the radio, a desire and a big dream.
After finishing my studies I headed off down to Cape Town to study Graphic and Web Design. The Design Studio had an exchange programme with a Norwegian college. Once I had completed my course I applied for the bursary but got denied. In this time I started my own business (Jamie k âdesigning your worldâ) but I ran out of money and I had started working. I managed to get a job in the Film industry as a runner and from there I moved onto a marketing company that did stage shows to promote their clients brands. I was a co-presenter on the Kelloggâs Road Show. It was in this time that I learnt how to get on stage (many mistakes but loads of fun) It was only a year an a half later that I got a phone call and the opportunity to go to Norway on a student exchange programme, this opportunity would change the course of my life.
I was in Oslo (Ronningen Folk High School) for 9 months and it was here where I completed my first demo with the help of lectures and other students. From here I was advised to apply to the London Music School, where I did a 6 months course in vocal technology. At the end of the course, I recorded 'These are The Days & Desire' with the help of my class mates (Martin and Duri).
From here I went searching for a manager and label. After 6 months of searching I applied through an advert in NME (music magazine) and got in contact with PYE Music. My manager put me in touch with Ben Jones (12 hits in UK top 20). I managed to get a crew together with the help of Joplin (house mate), who played keyboard, my collage mates Duri and Martin on the bass and guitars and Emma Wilson (female vocals and close friend). Ben bought in Perry a red hot drummer who has played with likes of Tricky and James Samuel. Thus we had a solid crew who had the potential to churn a âHOTâ album. All I had to do was step up to the plate and deliver the songs which I thought would work best. Iâm extremely proud of what we accomplished in the limited time (studio time) and limited resources (my budget).
In June I would have been in London for 3 years where I have been working, studying, gigging and just making the most of life.
