Songs about Near Live Experiences. IMHO, the greatest Josh Maxey Group CD to date. (of course, it is the first one to date also.)
6 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo, ROCK: Instrumental Rock
Details:
This music is an instrumental mix of straight ahead jazz, alt rock/country and blues. It is composition based and plays through as a cohesive work.
The sound has been described as cinematic and atmospheric.
The guitar sound is reminiscent of Grant Green, with an instrumentation in the vibe of mid 60's jazz. However, the writing is drawn from everyday listening and mainstream influences. Track one could be an alt rock riff. Think 90's rock meets jazz trio.
Across the Universe is a John Lennon classic. The treatment here is in quartet form. The foundation is Nick Burcher on upright bass and Evan Pazner on drums. In addition to the chord/melody style treatment of the vocal line there is a driving acoustic rhythm keeping in the spirit of the original classic.
Track four is called Vehicle. The intro is one of the highlights of the set. Nick, Evan and Josh create a feeling similar to being far out of the bright lights of the city and again seeing the night sky. The spell is broken by a jazz waltz in minor key followed by a melody played with resolution and determination. The solo section breaks with a traditional jazz guitar formula ending in overdriven release.
Between Two Worlds and As Above are the straight ahead offerings on the disc. As Above has Ian Young, NY based alto player, as a guest soloist. Both tracks confirm that whatever direction the band takes, it is always rooted strongly in jazz.
The disc ends where it began. The second section of Magnolia is a riff that is heavy on bass and rhythm with solos imposing tonalities over the song's bass line.
Info on the recording:
Recorded June 27th 2005 at Seaside Recording Studio in Brooklyn, NY
All songs written and arranged by Josh Maxey, except "Across the Universe" by Lennon/McCartney, Northern Songs Ltd.
