The Jimmy James Gang is soulful, organic band with lots of horns, muscular keyboards, funky rhythm guitar, and singing thatâs sweet and soulful one moment, then tears your heart out the next. The basic group numbers 7 players, but can swell to 10 -15 as fellow musicians join in at different gigs. (In many ways, the group is a throwback to the super group get-togethers such as Mad Dogs and Englishman with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell.)

Prior to joining The Jimmy James Gang, Jimmy James was playing with a four-man blues outfit called The Medium Wallys. (www.themediumwallys.com) Gene McAuliffe and T. Powers could be found anchoring Woodpile (www.woodpilemusic.com). Dave Westner has been playing drums with Todd Tibaud and Jabe, as well as countless bands in the recording studio. Paul Kochanski is a highly sought after bass player when heâs not playing with The Swinging Steaks. Greg Burgess has been playing with The Amazing Royal Crowns. Sean Staples, a phenomenal mandolin player, sits in with many groups and plays with The Resophonics and Jabe.

As to the super-soul-charged horn section, Paul Ahlstrand (www.paulahlstrand.com) on tenor sax has played on countless CDs, from Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters to Susan Tedeschi. On baritone sax, Doug James is a regular member of Duke Robillardâs band. On trumpet, Scott Aruda has been, for years, one of the hottest session players in Boston, as well as a teacher at Tufts University. And on slide trombone, Jeff Galindo is the man to call for any occasion. He is also a professor at Berklee School of Music.
