He has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Sutton's Bay (MI) Jazz Festival, Petoskey Jazz Festival, the Idlewild Jazz Festival as well as clubs and concerts in Michigan, California, Colorado, Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Taiwan.

His recordings as a leader include two CDs for the Delmark label featuring the legendary Ira Sullivan. His most recent, Itchin' To Groove, features the finest jazz musicians in Southwest Michigan. Among many reviews, Jazz Times has called Cooper, "a warm vibist who goes for the heart...".

In addition to teaching jazz lab band and jazz piano at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, MI, he is jazz band director during summer sessions at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Jim's jazz clinics integrate improvisation, history, vibraphone technique and performance. In 1997 he was Artist in Residence at the National School of the Arts in Taiwan.

He is co-founder and Artistic Director of Lakeshore Jazz Connection, Inc., a jazz presenting organization in Saugatuck, Michigan as well as founder of the Michigan Jazz Composer's Project. In 2003 Cooper joined the Michigan Humanities Council's Michigan Touring Artist roster for 2003-06.

Whether it's playing solo vibes to fronting a big band, Jim is available for concerts, clubs, festivals and clinics.
