Melodic, modern psychedelia.
5 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Psychedelic, ROCK: Modern Rock
Details:
Recorded during sessions for The Jigsaw Seenâs forthcoming album, âWhat About Christmas?â is destined to become a holiday classic. The title track of the bandâs new 5 song EP is a dynamic song featuring soaring mellotron strings, a Spectorian percussion arrangement and guitars both heavy and delicate.
Drawing from a live performance captured at Luna Park in Los Angeles, three live tracks are next. Featuring a plaintive vocal performance by Dennis Davison, âFirst of May,â originally recorded by the Bee Gees, ties in lyrically with the EPâs title track. The song segues into the Velvet Undergroundâs âJesus,â featuring some intricate guitar and bass interplay by Jonathan Lea and David Nolte. The band closes the live portion with their rousing rendition of the Ventureâs arrangement of âSleigh Rideâ, showcasing the thunderous drums of Teddy Freese. The live material has a vibe similar to that of the VUâs legendary Live at Maxâs Kansas City.
The final track is an acoustic work-up of âWhat About Christmas?â featuring glockenspiel and âDandelionâ style acoustic 12-string that is stunning in itâs stark beauty.
The new studio recordings have been meticulously mixed by Nick Walusko, known for his work with Brian Wilson and the Wondermints. What About Christmas? features a sleeve designed by bandmembers Jonathan Lea (best packaging Grammy nominee for The Jigsaw Seenâs album Zenith) and David Nolte.
In the past year The Jigsaw Seenâs legendary track âMy Name Is Tomâ has been featured on Rhinoâs critically acclaimed box set Children Of Nuggets and Apple iTunesâ popular Essential Garage compilation. Guitarist Jonathan Lea also appears on Dave Daviesâ (the Kinks) current release Transformation and Ann Magnusonâs forthcoming album Pretty Songs and Ugly Stories.
With What About Christmas? the band has managed to transcend the holiday song genre. âJingle Bell Rockâ it is not! Give a listen, and youâll discover another melancholy masterwork from The Jigsaw Seen.
