Girlish twang, lush pop, and a delicate fire of a voice that stitches through it all.
6 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Folk Rock, POP: Folky Pop
Details:
Love and Ammunition was recorded in August 2005 at JJ Plasencio's Hot Pepper Studios in Austin, TX. Produced by the gracious and innovative Lee Simmons, Love and Ammunition grew originally from the intent to record a full-length album. But these six songs maintained their stature above the others, and when budgeting and scheduling called for candidates, they were the natural contenders. The talented musicians on this disc include Lee on guitar, banjo, keys and vocals, JJ on bass and cello, and Kevin Pearson on drums. Jenny Gillespie wrote all songs, and played guitar, piano, and sang.
Love and Ammunition ranges from the delicate jazz folk of "Grenadine" to the sad alt-country of "Bradforton", to the sweeping pop balladry of "Los Angeles Tonight". The lyrics straddle the line between striking poetry and conversational confession. The melancholy but shimmering rock of Jenny Gillespie is highly influenced by artists such as Red House Painters and Ryan Adams. The sound is lush pop, then raucous twang, but Jenny's emotive voice (one she describes as a "girlish growl"), itself an instrument of expression and delicacy, holds this group of tunes together like a confident stitch through patchwork.
