Don't let the name of the self titled band mislead you, Inde' Skie's style of Americana is anything but music in disguise:
In fact their intriguing sound is an up-front, out-in-the-open mix of the best elements from folk, jazz, rock, country and bluegrass. Yes bluegrass! And while listeners will hear echoes of Jimmy Buffet, Joni Mitchell and numerous others in the singer-songwriter tradition, they also will hear traces of the Eagles and the Allman Brothers. The band has developed a style that builds upon tradition rather than simply perpetuating the past. The result is something both fresh and familiar.
âRun Into a Dark Night,â the 3rd track of six on âIndie Skies,â skillfully weaves the sounds of bluegrass with pop-rock to achieve a sound that comfortably blends the whimsy of the banjo with the gravitas of the organ. âRiver Song,â the 4th cut captures something essential in the legacy of acoustic-guitar troubadours, while the 2nd track on the disc incorporates the rich timber of the cello. In short Indieâ Skies will appeal to a wide spectrum of musical tastes.
Lyrically, the songs cover the usual subjects, but often turn a particularly poetic phrase, Most of the metaphors in these predominately chorus-less songs are taken from nature.
Wind, shadows, oceans and deserts provide the lexicon. For example, in âRiver Song, one line seems to capture the spirit of the prairie, âthe sun goes down and wind makes sounds/of people laying back/ a friendly face smiles at you and you smile right back.â
The members of the band include Karry Kofr on acoustic guitar and vocals, Gary Nicks on acoustic guitar, mandolin & vocals, Rickey Ray on guitar & vocals, Rick Tegtmeier on bass, David Blue on drums and percussion, and Stephen Tracy on piano, Hammond B3 organ, banjo & vocals. Individually every member is a talented song writer.
Karry is a recipient of a prestigious âBillboard Magazineâ award, the music industries worldwide trade publication and was voted the Tulsa Songwriterâs Associationâs, Songwriter of the year for 2 years running. S. Woods
