Details:
Award-winning composer Jeffrey Fisher' s unique new album Satyagraha - Songs of the Earth, is an outstanding collection of meditative, ambient and healing, instrumental music, featuring his 160 year old Bass Violin. Satyagraha, the power of truth, was Gandhiâs term for non-violent resistance, and is the name of Jeffrey Fisherâs off-the-grid retreat in the San Jacinto Mountains where he composed and recorded this album.
Jeffrey also plays Native American Flute and keyboards. His compositions and instrumentation depicts both the peacefulness and intensity of nature, the colors and textures of the land and reveals musical influences from the entire planet. Jeffrey Fisher is a well known author, Tai Chi teacher, painter and healer. Jeffrey is continuously touring the USA, performing from Satyagraha and lecturing at various centers, stores and other venues throughout the year.
His healing work incorporates Reiki, Acupressure, Reflexology and Auricular Medicine. He is a museum-shown watercolorist, poet and speaker on wellness, nutrition and the principles of Tai Chi Chuan. His other albums include Ocean of Consciousness---the Bhagavad Gita Suite, Triumph of the Spirit (written to accompany the series of paintings by New Mexico visionary Charles Collins, and award winning album Fairy TalesâMusic from the Ballet âHans Christian Andersen.â
SatyagrahaâComposer Notes
I was a born improviser, and I played nearly all the instruments in the school band, including tuba and string bass, but it wasnât until the late 70âs, when I was working as a blues guitarist in the clubs in East Oakland, that I fell in with the bass. I was taking lessons on the guitar with an incredible musician and bassist who had switched to guitarâFred Marshall, who can be heard on some of Vince Guaraldiâs albums. He turned me on to theory and the bass, and for the next few years I was privileged to play with some great musiciansânot only jazz pianists, but singers, rock and folk groupsâeverybody needed a bass player!
My first instrument was an old plywood Kay; I ended up stripping off the varnish and turned it into a blonde. A few years later, I sold my house in Berkeley and bought my present instrument, which was built a hundred years before I was born.
The bass violin is a social instrumentâits role in the orchestra and in small groups is very defined. It holds the bottom and establishes the rhythm in small groups, and adds weight and emotion in the orchestra. Its value as a solo instrumentâits range of sounds and textures and expressivenessâis often ignored.
Satyagraha was Gandhiâs name for non-violent resistance. It means âthe power of truth,â and I took the name for this off-the-grid ranch and retreat to not only align with and honor Gandhiâs ideals, but also because it fits the experienceâpolitically and spiritually. The water comes from the earth, the power from the sun; we sleep in a tipi and cook the wild food and garden food on a wood stove. Such simplicity is not always simple to maintain, but it is health-giving and inspiring.
In my years playing and listeningâespecially blues and traditional styles, Iâve heard and felt an underlying connection with the earth, the specific area that music came from. In this album, Iâm tapping into that feeling directlyânot just in mimicking the sounds of birds and coyotes but in portraying the landscape musically. I know the digital recording process is one step removed from the actual sound, but out here at Satyagraha, we at least power the computer with the sunlight that makes it down into the canyon.
