Details:
Recorded just before I left town in January 1986, these selections represent the best recorded versions of music I wrote and programmed during the previous nine years as a"professional student." Absolutely broke with no job prospects and almost no friends, I moved to Los Angeles with $300 and a prayer. My friend Mark Stevens let me sleep on the floor of his apartment and my father sent me a few hundred dollars in the mail.
The tapes survived a fire, apartment flooding, and numerous hot summer days. Originally recorded on Beta Max HiFi, the music was converted to DAT someitme in the early 1990's. Ten years later I converted the DAT tapes to CD-R. I spent the past two years restoring the tracks to the best possible condition and am proud that I have finally produced this CD.
I am indebted to the University of Illinois for the opportunity to practice music composition. I appreciate the hard work and inspiritation of my comrades on the PLATO Music Project. I certainly could not have done this without the IMS and the PLATO system. Special thanks to Dale Sinder for loaning me his BetaMax Hi-Fi VCR. Special thanks to Brent Backhus for the excellent audio restoration work at Real Time Copies in Culver City, California.
Also, special thanks to Sherwin Gooch for his original vision. Thanks to Lippold Haken for carrying it on. Thanks to Scott Wyatt who is the heart and soul of experimental music composition at the University of Illinois. Thanks also to Salvatore Martirano, Sever Tipei, Bruno Nettle, Herbert Brun, G. David Peters, James W. Beauchamp, and the entire University of Illinois Marching Band for their generosity and musical inspiration.
And finally, thanks to my father who was the best piano player in the whole world...
