POP: Piano, ROCK: Modern Rock
Details:
There is a metamorphosis to Heather Christian as she steps onto a stage,
sits down at a piano, and draws a microphone close. It is a stepping into
her craft, the falling away of the viels resembling a girl and exposing the
heart and voice of a poet and mature soul. To be at a performance of
Heather's is to witness something intimate and powerful. Those that have
seen her at work would issue the same warning to those who haven't - to not
discount this young woman as just another young beauty with a voice. Before
you is a formidable creature, and you could learn something from her.
Born in New Orleans and raised in the real South of Natchez, Mississippi,
Heather was blessed to be born to two incredibly loyal and supportive
parents, Dennis and Darlene Christian, who reared her amidst the Catholic
Church, Southern blues, and the rich culture of their home. It's no
coincidence that much of her music has flavors of that musical heritage.
Pursuing art and self-expression as soon as she could walk, Heather studied
classical piano from the age of 3, which provided much of the musical
foundation for what she does. Christian maintains that her primary roots lie
somewhere between Jimmy Reed and Frederic Chopin. Never content to be idle,
Heather has studied poetry, theater, many forms of dance, several
instruments, and more. It was theater first that took her journey at
eighteen from the deep south to New York University's illustrious Tisch
School of the Arts. While there, studying drama-- she set off on a quest for
a medium to house all expressive medium, and ended up, accidentally writing
her first song in June of 2003. Songwriting, to her, houses all the modes of
self-expression she so adoringly gravitates towards. Despite her lack of
knowlege and experience, she took it by the reins immediately and decided to
call herself, first and foremost, a songstress. She has also studied briefly
at the Trinity college in Dublin, and graduated from Tisch in 2004.
A compulsive writer of journals, a dedicated poet, and a full-time thinker,
it's no surprise that Heather's musical background soon married with her
power with words in the form of a potent singer-songwriter. With her unique
persona and rare musical sound, she has been paving her way in the New York
music scene, playing in all shapes and sizes of venues, gathering praise and
an adoring following. She has been seen at NYC's Bitter End, The Apocalypse
Lounge, 13 Little Devils, and Rockwood Music Hall where she served a
residency in November of 2005. She is also actively writing scores for
theater, film, and dance. She is most recently credited with a Sonata she
wrote for dance piece "Learning in Lower Animals" shown at DTW in the spring
of '06.
In a world where popular art is often very easy art, Heather's work and
presence are unique and important. Turning the pages of her songbook one
would fine instances of intense self-scrutiny, evaluations on the human
heart, and moments of heart-breaking beauty. All in all, Heather's music
offers a sense of emotional place for the listener.
Heather has been called the "female Bruce Springsteen". She doesn't know
what that means.
