WORLD: World Fusion, NEW AGE: Meditation

Details:
Bhaktisiddhartha is a conservatory-trained musician with a degree in musical composition, who later got into jazz fusion and traditional Indian music. He spent years studying not only music and kirtan, but also yoga, Vedic philosophy, meditation and other Vedic arts in remote Indian monasteries. His studies of tai-chi, chi k'ung, Native American spiritual practices, and other approaches to spiritual life lend a rich background to his music.

"You Will Attain Me" was composed and recorded in Hilo, Hawai'i in 2003, after Bhaktisiddhartha had a profound spiritual experience on the island of Kaua'i. After camping by himself, chanting and meditating in an isolated jungle location for six months, he had a powerful vision that became the inspiration for this CD. You will have to listen to the music to find out more about it, but the whole story is there.

As with most of his other recordings, Bhaktisiddhartha played and recorded all the instruments and parts you will hear in the music. Bhaktisiddhartha's music continues and deepens the recent East-West fusion trend, portraying ancient mantras and Eastern spiritual themes in settings using Western musical styles.

The first track, "You Will Attain Me" is similar to an operatic recitative. It tells the story of Bhaktisiddhartha's spiritual vision. It weaves in and out of storytelling mode and the ancient Vedic mantra that Bhaktisiddhartha used to attain his vision.

"Cool Bhajan Kutir" is a good-humored funky romp describing Bhaktisiddhartha's studio in the basement of a friend's home in Hilo. It really gets down in the jam, so look out for those swinging sharp-ninth chords!

"I Will Sing for You" describes Bhaktisiddhartha's heart's desire for his spiritual life. It sounds sort of like Procul Harem's "Lighter Shade of Pale" -- but only sort of. It uses some unique chord progressions to resolve the cadence of the choruses that ring with romantic spiritual energy.

"Lalita Nisanta" is a piece written using the RagaJazz principles that Bhaktisiddhartha developed while studying Indian music. The whole piece sounds like a bossa-nova, but both the melody and harmony parts are actually written in Raga Lalita. It describes the early-morning meditation of Nisanta-lila, a highly esoteric spiritual subject that is a powerful aid to self-realization.

"Om Purnam" is a setting of the famous Invocation of Sri Isopanisad. In contrast to some of the moody pieces on this CD, it is clean, bright and energetic.

"When the Madness Passes" is a thrash-metal piece (really!) written for Bhaktisiddhartha's son Orion, a lead singer in a heavy metal band. It is a very ambitious and experimental mix of bizarre sound effects, screaming guitars and powerful vocals over a pounding beat. As usual in Bhaktisiddhartha's music, the climax of the piece is a certain esoteric mantra that has become rather well-known all over the world recently.
