Description This play is clearly the work of a genius, intricately thought out and seamlessly threaded together. The audience shares Christian's innermost experiences, memories and fantasies as he faces the further external and environmental confusion of the hospital ward and staff. Anyone who wants to understand another person's experience of bi-polar should read this script... and anyone who wants others to understand should stage this play. About the Author Stephen J. Habel was born in Chicago, Illinois where he now resides and writes full time. He attended the University of Illinois-Chicago with a major in English. He has written several more books and scripts, published by Chipmunka, and has plans to work writing for a film company or starting a film company of his own. He enjoys listening to music, reading, writing, watching movies and taking walks around Chicago. Book Extract FADE IN: INT. HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM Christian Roland, 27, average build, brown eyes, brown shortly cut hair, sits on a stretcher in an emergency room. He bites his nails. CHRISTIAN (v.o) My name is Christian. I'm twenty-seven and I'm bipolar. I don't know how to tell you what that means, but I can tell you that I get really pissed off and moody sometimes and I do crazy things. It always comes back to bite me in the ass. I just didn't know that they would lock me up for that. A nurse enters. NURSE Make a fist. The nurse is about to take blood. CHRISTIAN (To nurse) I hate needles. NURSE It will be over in a pinch. Christian is pinched by the needle. CHRISTIAN Damn it, ouch! NURSE There, just hold tight. Little bottles slowly fill with blood. CHRISTIAN (v.o) You see, they check my blood to make sure that I take my medication. If the blood levels are out of whack, they put me in a nut ward. Why do they do this? Because I'm crazy. At this point, I could bargain with the nurse.
