Humboldt Squid formed in an East L.A. warehouse in the winter of '05. Marc Brown was down in L.A. roaming the Hollywood Hills in search of an animalistic drummer. He began to question what he was doing after finding only sprinkley whimps in those hills. Finally he found Mark Quinn, progressive punk veteran of the San Antonio, Seattle and San Francisco scenes. When it comes to mind bending tripadelic lightning storms Mark Quinn really had the touch. Within months they had written the first album and were playing together at all hours of the day. Observers of these early sessions reported many visions. Still, they maintianed an ectocontainment field around the project until the completion of the album, only playing at illegal warehouse parties around the bay and in L.A. In April of '06 they agreed to play at the famous 333 Slim's in San Francisco. From the opening chords of their live acoustic ballad about dogs they had everyone in rapture. Jamming continued until sunrise when the production talents of Justin Phelps (Cake, Mr. Bungle, Chuck Prophet) were brought in to carve the Humboldt Squid debut album out of the miles of tape which had accumulated in the Analog Igloo.
